The Quebec government-sponsored online portal that promotes and sells goods from merchants in the province has about 400 businesses using the site, and some say the project has run its course. Innovation Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon defended the initiative, saying Panier bleu can be adjusted as needs change. “The day merchants say we don’t need Panier bleu because they’re selling on their own, we will have won,” he said at a Montreal event Thursday. Talking point: The platform has been leaderless since August after the departure of general manager Alain Dumas. Launched in April 2020 as a measure to aid business coping with COVID-19-era shutdowns, Panier bleu has been slow going from the start. The site, seeded with $12 million from the Quebec government’s investment arm, only began accepting payments in October 2022. Panier bleu is difficult to navigate and, despite its made-in-Quebec pretensions, is chock full of China-produced goods.
