The Canadian Space Launch Act would do little by itself, but it would give the cabinet or federal transport minister authority to regulate vehicles and sites for launches and re-entries, to require people to have insurance before trying to fire things into space, and to limit land uses near key sites that could interfere with their operations. Talking point: The existing civil aviation law doesn’t contemplate space launches, so oversight of space launches is ad hoc; Liberal ministers said clear regulations will help the Canadian space industry and move the country toward being able to launch satellites itself, rather than relying heavily on co-operation from the United States. Canada has two companies vying to run private commercial spaceports: Maritime Launch Services in Nova Scotia and NordSpace in Newfoundland. With backing from MDA Space and the federal government, Maritime Launch Services’ share price has risen more than twentyfold in the past year.
