Apple plans to upgrade Siri with abilities like having conversations about health issues, built-in machine translation and hardware support for an unspecified new device. The documents, leaked to The Guardian by a former contractor, also show that the company rewrote the voice assistant’s responses to questions about feminism to be what it called “neutral,” while avoiding the use of the word itself. (The Guardian)

Amazon partnered with the U.K.’s National Health Service in a bid to reduce demand on the health-care system’s services. When the country’s users ask the smart speaker health-related questions, it automatically searches the NHS’s website and provides medically backed tips and advice. But Alexa does not provide back-and-forth conversation about health problems—something Apple plans to include in its upgrade. Apple’s inclusion of the feature speaks to its increased focus on personal health, especially through its Apple Watch. That device, along with others like its AirPods, has become a larger source of revenue amid falling iPhone sales.
