Industry minister Mélanie Joly said it is important the Liberal government uphold its election campaign promise to bring back incentives that spur demand for electric vehicles. The government plans “to put money where our mouth is” on EVs along with defence spending and support for factories that make batteries that power vehicles and other products, she said at an Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association event in Vaughan, Ont. on Tuesday evening. Talking point: Joly’s support for subsidies is a good sign for would-be EV buyers after the iZEV consumer incentive program ran out of money in January. The Liberals said while campaigning that they would “look at ways” to reintroduce a purchase incentive worth up to $5,000 on EVs in a way that also supports domestic workers and supply chains. The program falls under the portfolio of Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland, who has been investigating Tesla’s use of the program. Transport Canada received about $693 million to administer the program in the 2023-2024 budget year.
