Talking point: If Canada is headed for a recession, as some economists are forecasting, workers will begin it in an unusually strong position. There was one open job in June for each unemployed worker—statistically, at least, not that they could all be matched up—which is a record low. In the same period a year ago, there were nearly two workers for each unfilled job. (The 149,700 open jobs in health care and social assistance was 40.8 per cent higher than last year.) Quebec, B.C., Saskatchewan and Manitoba all had more unfilled jobs than unemployed workers.
