Talking point: The Liberals announced plans to restrict “very large” corporate investors from buying up single-family properties in their last budget, but weren’t specific about what kind of investors they were worried about, or exactly what those restrictions would look like. The Finance Department is now asking the public, housing experts and provincial and Indigenous governments to weigh in with ideas.The United States has struggled with large corporate investors snapping up family homes and driving up prices since the 2007–2008 financial crisis. Two years ago, the Bank of Canada noted an upward trend in the share of home purchases by investors in nearly all major cities across Canada, though the bank did not differentiate between condos and single-family homes.
