The consulting company currently has 2,000 employees in Canada. The Calgary office will serve clients in the Western provinces and central and Pacific Northwest U.S. states. The firm already operates from Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver. (The Logic)
Talking point: Like other Indian IT-consulting giants, Infosys has increasingly moved to hire staff locally in its major markets, in addition to the back-office functions it handles from its home country; that comes as firms found it increasingly difficult to get U.S. H-1B visas to relocate employees under the Trump administration. Infosys has hired 13,000 people in the U.S. since 2017, with another 12,000 planned, president Ravi Kumar said at Wednesday’s announcement. Canada—and Calgary—are receiving similar treatment. Infosys will partner with universities in Alberta to develop courses that will prepare students to work for it, and Premier Jason Kenney said his government would also involve the firm in its forthcoming job-training program. Shankar also cited the potential for energy-sector digitization, a global business the firm could conduct from Calgary.
