Talking point: Relations between the countries have worsened since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday that there were “credible allegations” that India’s government was behind the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh separatist figure in B.C., and demanded India’s cooperation with an investigation. India’s foreign ministry said Canada has provided no specific information on the case and accused Canada of failing to act when India has asked for similar cooperation. Canada is pulling diplomats from India and Canadian brands like Tim Hortons (which entered India last year) face boycotts. The Business Council of Canada, which has argued for closer economic ties with India, said through spokesperson Howard Fremeth that it’s “still monitoring before commenting” on the situation.
