Talking point: Huawei could fill the gap in the Chinese market for AI processors that the U.S. created this month by restricting exports of Nvidia’s H20 chip, which the firm produced after U.S. curbs on the H100. China needs alternatives to American GPUs to fuel its AI industry, and Beijing has allocated tens of billions of dollars to build up domestic semiconductor design and manufacturing. Huawei, a primary target of Washington’s tech export controls, has already replaced U.S. components in its flagship smartphone. Still, data centre operators and AI developers can’t simply swap out one type of chip for another and expect the same results. The performance and efficiency of AI models depends heavily on the code that controls the hardware, so Chinese 910C buyers will need Huawei to match Nvidia’s software capabilities as well.
