Talking point: Ottawa subsidized the development of Medicago’s two-shot vaccine, which it manufactures via a plant-based process. In October 2020, the federal government awarded the firm a $173-million loan to pay for R&D and manufacturing capacity, and ordered up to 76 million doses. Medicago said Thursday it wants to fill that order “as soon as possible.” It will be a late addition to Canada’s vaccine drive, with nearly 30.7 million residents having already received a second dose and almost 17.2 million a third. Nearly two-thirds of all shots given in Canada were Pfizer-BioNTech’s offering, while Moderna accounted for most of the rest. Medicago, which is owned by Osaka-based Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma and U.S. tobacco giant Philip Morris International, has not announced regulatory applications or orders in any other countries.
