The federal Green Party’s newly released platform promises to make Canada a global leader in research and innovation by increasing national R&D spending to 2.5 per cent of GDP, promoting green infrastructure and building standards, and investing in cleantech and renewable energy, including a cross-Canada power grid. The Greens also say they’d develop a carbon budget to set limits on greenhouse-gas emissions. (The Logic)
Talking point: The Greens elected three MPs in 2019, and despite their recent struggles, could be an important voting bloc if this election leads to close seat counts in the House of Commons. Their platform also includes promises that could be tough for the Liberals or Conservatives to swallow, though, including stopping all fossil-fuel extraction and exploration, barring new nuclear-power projects, getting Via Rail into the intercity-bus business and hiking corporate taxes from 15 per cent to 21 per cent (with an additional five-point hike on commercial banks).
