Talking point: Aquilina’s comments add to the calls from auto sector CEOs urging Prime Minister Mark Carney to drop the policy in the face of U.S. tariffs. Under Ottawa’s 2023 regulations, zero-emissions vehicles must make up 20 per cent of sales by 2026, rising to 100 per cent of sales by 2035. Yet, industry representatives say federal incentives aimed at making EVs more affordable are too low to encourage widespread adoption. A spokesperson for Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin told the National Post the government would consult with industry to “make sure that our measures reflect times we are in,” suggesting for the first time Ottawa might be open to easing the mandate.
