Talking point: The proposed legislation is part of a push from governments nationwide to fast track significant industrial and infrastructure projects amid trade tensions with the U.S. It would let the Ontario government declare “special economic zones” and exempt projects in those zones from legal and regulatory requirements. Nishnawbe Aski Nation, which represents 49 First Nation communities in northern Ontario, says the bill would eliminate the rights of Treaty holders. Last week the government proposed explicitly adding the duty to consult with First Nations to the bill. Still, several First Nations groups rallied in front of Queen’s Park in opposition Monday. Temagami First Nation Chief Shelly Moore-Frappier told Global News that Indigenous groups are also strongly considering legal action, and even highway blockades.
