Talking point: The decline in investment doesn’t necessarily mean the 2024 fintech resurgence—when Canadian investment hit a record US$7.5 billion in the second half of the year—is over. Two megadeals boosted the 2024 figures: the US$6.3-billion buyout of payments firm Nuvei, and a US$1-billion private equity investment in Montreal’s Plusgrade. KPMG partner Dubie Cunningham said in a release that Canadian fintech investment has been “quite robust” in 2025, especially considering the economic uncertainty caused by the U.S.-led global trade war. Globally, fintech investment fell to US$$44.7 billion in the first half, down from US$54.2 billion in the same period last year.
