Opto Investments’s goal is to give individuals chances to buy into private-capital opportunities like the ones Mark Machin got to see as CEO of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, he said in a news release. With him as CEO, and Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale as chair, Opto has raised US$145 million in a Series A round. (The Logic)
Talking point: Tiger Global led the funding, which included 8VC, where Lonsdale is managing partner, and some of Machin’s own money. It reportedly pegs Opto’s value at US$475 million. Machin’s stint at CPP Investments ended in his resignation last year, after The Wall Street Journal reported he flew to Dubai and got a COVID-19 vaccination before the shots were widely available in Canada and when the government was fiercely opposing foreign travel. Machin is British but had been with CPP Investments since 2012; he’s now an advisor to Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund. Lonsdale, meanwhile, is a member of the “Palantir Pack” in the Peter Thiel Extended Universe.
