Talking point: Nemer’s most pressing current role is as one of five leaders of the federal COVID-19 Immunity Task Force, set up in April to coordinate blood test-based surveys to determine the extent of the virus’s spread. Last month, Evidence for Democracy called for the position of the chief science advisor position to be legislated so that a future government couldn’t simply eliminate it by failing to appoint someone to the job. The advocacy group also wants $2 million in extra annual funding for the office and a wider mandate including leading a national science and technology strategy. Thursday’s announcement did not include any changes to the role.
