Workers assigned through platforms such as SkipTheDishes would be guaranteed to make at least minimum wage, in addition to any tips they earn, and will have a right to an explanation if they’re kicked off a platform, under a new set of labour-law reforms the Progressive Conservative government presented. Talking point: The provincial government passed a Working for Workers Act last fall that beefed up some worker protections, and began signalling last week that it had another on the way. The new bill, called the Working for Workers Act, 2022, also increases fines for workplace-safety violations, requires some employers to keep anti-overdose kits on hand, and includes disclosure requirements for companies that track workers electronically. Some of the rights for gig workers—like Uber Eats drivers—had already been included in a separate order from the province’s Ministry of Labour.
