The quantum computing firm will relocate from Palo Alto, Calif., by the end of the year. It also plans to open a new U.S. R&D centre in Florida. (The Logic)
Talking point: Founded and long headquartered in British Columbia, D-Wave moved its executive office to Palo Alto in June 2023 for accounting reasons. But the firm has been primarily incorporated in the U.S. since it listed on the New York Stock Exchange in August 2022 by combining with a special-purpose acquisition company. Boca Raton offers D-Wave both revenues and subsidies. Florida Atlantic University has bought one of the firm’s flagship annealing quantum computers for its local campus, in a US$20-million deal. City council has also discussed US$500,000 in incentives to get D-Wave to locate at its innovation campus, a former IBM facility. In return, D-Wave would employ at least 100 people in Boca Raton at an average salary of at least US$125,000. The company did not respond to questions about what the headquarters shift means for its staff or operations in Burnaby, B.C.
