The Canada Revenue Agency has filed a Federal Court lawsuit against the Vancouver crypto firm, seeking the identities of 2,500 of its users in an effort to identify possible tax evaders. The Canadian Press was first to report the news. (The Logic, The Canadian Press)
Talking point: The lawsuit is part of an ongoing struggle by the CRA to get Canadian crypto holders to report their investments on their taxes. About 15 per cent of crypto users don’t file their taxes on time or at all, and out of those who do, almost one-third “have been categorized as high risk for non-compliance,” according to an affidavit from CRA official Predrag Mizdrak. The CRA’s crypto team has recovered $100 million through audits over the past three years and has launched five crypto-related criminal investigations since 2020, which have yet to result in charges, CRA spokesperson Nina Ioussoupova said in an email to The Logic. Dapper Labs did not respond to a request for comment.
