Global News let 35 journalists and media workers go this week across Canada, according to Unifor, which represents Corus employees. A CBC report said they were in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario. (The Logic, CBC)
Talking point: Corus is at risk of losing programming from Warner Bros. Discovery after Rogers announced it signed a multi-year deal for rights to channels including the Food Network and HGTV. That could make Corus shares near worthless, according to TD analysts, although regulators could intervene to block the Rogers deal. Corus spokesperson Cathy Paine told The Logic the recent cuts were part of an efficiency review and related to the “current economic and regulatory reality,” including Canadian content spending requirements mandated by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. Corus shares were down almost 20 per cent on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Thursday.
