Talking point: Before that can happen, Tait said, all Canadians need access to internet connections fast enough to stream video and audio—“broadband ubiquity,” she called it. Tait said with young people and newcomers to the country consuming content online rather than via broadcast, and with subscriber numbers for streaming services rising during the pandemic, audiences are “dragging us” to digital. Her comments follow those of BBC’s director general Tim Davie, who said last year the British public broadcaster is planning a “digital-first” future amid budget cutbacks. They also follow the trajectory of the digital-first framework CBC released in 2014 under her predecessor, Hubert Lacroix.
