Prime Minister Mark Carney said that the new federal office convened four federal departments over the past five months to co-ordinate with the Quebec government and secure both federal financing and new customer agreements for the mine, billed as the largest graphite mine in the G7. Talking point: The mine, roughly 120 kilometres north of Montreal, is one of 22 projects that the Liberal government aims to streamline through the MPO, as it tries to speed up resource extraction for domestic projects and export deals. Carney touted graphite’s potential applications in the aerospace and defence industry in an announcement on Tuesday, defending his government’s defence spending even as the U.S. paused a long-running military collaboration, citing lack of “credible progress” by Canada.
