HBC had previously planned to keep a small number of stores open, but has since held liquidation sales at all of its locations. A total of 17 prospective buyers have made offers for Hudson’s Bay’s assets and operations—with some still in the running to acquire and own its stores. The company, which owes $1.13 billion to debt holders, was granted creditor protection on March 7. “This choice feels as strategic as it feels patriotic,” said Canadian Tire president and CEO Greg Hicks in the press release, adding that it is “disheartening to witness the final days of another great Canadian retailer.”
