Talking point: Efforts to hack the natural gas pipeline network were detailed in leaked Pentagon documents that exposed sensitive information about Russia’s war in Ukraine and other matters over the weekend. The New York Times was unable to identify the validity of the documents. Canada’s energy and utilities sectors are common prey for cyber criminals, as my colleague Aleksandra reported, targeted at nearly double the rate of all other industries combined. A recent report by the Communications Security Establishment found that “critical infrastructure is increasingly at risk from cyber threat activity” in Canada, but said such state-sponsored disruptions are unlikely in the absence of outright hostility between Canada and foreign adversaries.
