Talking point: The latest hiring numbers add to the evidence that while U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade policies have severely bent the Canadian economy, they haven’t yet broken it. The jobless rate declined to 6.9 per cent, and the employment rate—which measures the percentage of the total working age population that’s employed—increased to 60.8 per cent. Notably, the unemployment rate in Windsor, Ont. dropped below double-digit levels. Still, these numbers demonstrate resilience, not strength. The jobless rate was five per cent three years ago and the employment rate was hovering around 62.5 per cent in the spring of 2023. The jobless rate in Windsor was still around 9.6 per cent. The economy is weak and increasingly vulnerable to homegrown stresses: total hours worked declined in October, as an estimated 87,000 employees lost hours due to disputes between employers and unions.
