Talking point: The international competitions risk bolstering hostile countries’ military and economies with Western technology, CSIS said, particularly in the case of China. Pitch competitions offer startups the chance to showcase their work in the hopes of winning prizes, exposure and investments—or at least some valuable feedback. Entrepreneurs who choose to participate should consider filing for patent protection in Canada, the U.S. and the host country, and only reveal what’s absolutely necessary, CSIS advised. Even then, the agency says firms should keep an eye out for misuse of their tech.
