Talking point: The partnership could allow Canada to learn from Europe’s digital ID developments. In June, the EU government proposed a framework for digital ID that is part of an effort to make all key public services available online by 2030. Under the framework, citizens of EU countries would have access to a digital wallet that links their national IDs with personal records such as bank accounts or educational qualifications. In contrast, some experts have criticized Canada for not having a clearer plan to roll out the technology here, which could decrease costs and hurdles associated with services like applying for a loan, signing a lease or opening a bank account. The lack of a public strategy hasn’t stopped financial-services companies like Interac from pursuing their own solutions that could soon be widely available.
