The governments of Canada, the U.S. and others said in a joint statement that the Yemen-based and Iran-backed rebel group “will bear the responsibility of the consequences” of continuing to threaten lives and the global economy. The Houthis appeared to ignore the warning, launching a drone attack hours later. (Bloomberg, The Associated Press)
Talking point: The drone and missile launches began shortly after the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas on Israel, and the Houthis have claimed their actions are an effort to pressure Israel to stop its counterattacks in Gaza. The U.S. has responded with some military action. The ongoing conflict has upset supply chains. About 12 per cent of global trade passes through there and many container ships are now avoiding the route, diverting to ones that can be up to 25 per cent longer. That could mean higher prices for consumers.
