Talking point: Artificial intelligence has had some high-profile ethics scandals, such as arrests allegedly catalyzed by racist facial recognition and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportations allegedly facilitated by the technology. Sama, however, aims to use its power for good. The Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec is investing through its diversity-focused Equity 253 fund, noting Sama’s B Corp certification and ethical hiring model that it says has helped lift more than 56,000 people out of poverty in Kenya and Uganda. The investment follows the Caisse’s precedent-setting September announcement that it plans to divest from oil production and exploration.
