The Virginia-based company manufactures cameras that identify drivers who ignore school-bus stop signs. The company cited Montreal’s AI infrastructure—and the estimated 10,000 school buses on Quebec roads—as part of the reason it chose the city. BusPatrol has struck a deal with Montreal’s Hypertech to manufacture the cameras in Quebec. (La Presse)
Talking point: Founded in 1995, BusPatrol doesn’t charge for the installation and operation of its systems, harvesting instead roughly 60 per cent of the money generated from the tickets it issues to recalcitrant drivers. The company emphasizes prevention, saying its system reduces the number of offences by 25 to 30 per cent; CEO Jean Soulière, a Quebecer himself, said revenue growth comes instead from expansion to farther-flung school districts. In any case, Quebec is seemingly a ripe market for the product. According to a 2018 study, Quebec drivers are among the worst offenders when it comes to passing stopped school buses.
