Talking point: Ottawa dedicated $13 billion over five years in the November budget to build affordable housing using modern methods like prefabrication. Build Canada Homes has already started looking for qualified builders to develop parcels of federal land in Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto and Ottawa. The agency hopes to drive demand for innovative builders, and said businesses that need other support should look to their regional development agencies or the government’s Strategic Response Fund. Economist Mike Moffatt said without complementary government support for early-stage innovation, companies with promising new building methods risk never being able to deploy them.
