The asset management giant and Florida-based power utility—the largest in the U.S.—are building the facility on the site of a defunct Cold War uranium-enrichment plant. It will include a two-gigawatt natural gas-fired power plant, up to 2.6 gigawatts of battery storage and an AI and high-performance computing campus with 1.8 gigawatts of computing capacity. Talking point: The investment is part of Brookfield’s push into the broader AI value chain, across which the firm manages about $100 billion in assets. The firm is also raising US$10 billion for a dedicated AI infrastructure fund, with backers including Nvidia and the Kuwait Investment Authority. Earlier this week, Brookfield announced a partnership with Nvidia and internet company Naver to invest up to US$9 billion in data centre expansion in South Korea. In Kentucky, Brookfield will develop the data-centre campus while NextEra will work with non-profit utilities Big Rivers Electric Power and Jackson Purchase Energy Cooperative, as well as local utility Paducah Power System, to supply power and battery storage.
