Talking point: Best Buy is yet another company that hasn’t traditionally sold subscriptions that is now working them into its business model. Some restaurants have started to offer unlimited drinks, free delivery or a customer’s favourite appetizer at each visit for a monthly fee. Automakers have been toying with charging for things such as heated seats and the ability to warm an engine from a phone app. Best Buy said the program, which is separate from its years-old $19.99-a-month membership that offers customer support and other perks, made sense for its customers who want to own the best technology, can pay over time as opposed to upfront and care about sustainability. Best Buy offers other membership-style programs in the U.S., spokesperson Mathew Wilson said.
