The research group at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy released a report detailing major concerns about MY2022, the mandatory app for all Winter Olympics attendees. The report says the app’s encryption of users’ voice audio and file transfers can be easily sidestepped, and that the issues may violate China’s own privacy laws. (The Logic)
Talking point: The app also has features for users to report “politically sensitive” content, with a currently inactive censorship keyword list that includes topics like Xinjiang and Tibet. A number of countries are taking potential technology security risks seriously, including Australia, Belgium and Canada, which have reportedly advised their athletes to avoid Wi-Fi networks and use burner phones if possible. The U.S. has warned athletes to leave their devices at home, as they may otherwise be compromised with malicious software, with potential negative impacts on future use.
