In B.C., many platform companies that participated said workers should not be classified as employees and doing so would eliminate their flexibility, especially with working on multiple apps. Several academics argued that workers need flexibility due to low pay. The companies said they support creating minimum standards, such as a pooled benefit plan. The different groups disagreed on how to best classify gig workers and offer benefits. The government said it will use the feedback to “inform the next steps.”
