The Cupertino, Calif.-headquartered firm currently has 211 open positions in its ad platforms division, in which 276 staff currently work, according to LinkedIn data. Investment bank Evercore ISI estimates Apple will make US$5 billion in ad revenue in 2022, growing to US$30 billion in 2026. (The Logic, Financial Times)

Talking point: The tech giant currently sells spots in its news service and in search results in its app store. Ads are still a small contributor to Apple’s business; the firm had US$365 billion in net sales revenue in its 2021 fiscal year ended Sept. 25, 2021, and employed some 154,000 people. Fellow tech giants Meta (US$115 billion in 2021), Google (US$209 billion) and even Amazon (US$31 billion) all make significantly more from ads. But Apple is gaining market share, according to research firm Appsummer. Its ramp-up follows backlash from other firms that sell digital ads—or whose businesses are linked to them—over April 2021 iOS changes to developers’ ability to track user activity across their devices. Apple framed the shift as increasing privacy, but tech leaders such as Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke have questioned it.
