Talking point: The code of practice is designed as an interim step ahead of regulations tied to the Liberal government’s proposed Artificial Intelligence and Data Act, currently before Parliament. Last month, the three tech giants and other AI firms signed on to a similar set of commitments developed by the Biden administration to address generative AI risks. Amazon spokesperson Sandra Benjamin told The Logic the company supports “effective risk and use case-based guardrails” that protect civil rights, increase public trust and give companies “legal certainty.” Microsoft is committed to “ensuring AI is developed in a responsible way that benefits society,” said Veronica Langvee, head of communications for Canada. Google Canada spokesperson Luiza Staniec said the firm is encouraged to see governments “addressing the right policy frameworks for AI.” All three companies said they would provide input to the consultations.
