Talking point: Rousseau, who was with the company for nearly two decades, left shortly after facing widespread condemnation for his recorded—almost entirely in English—condolences to the family of Quebecer Antoine Forest, one of two pilots killed in a collision at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport in March. The ability to communicate in French was among the criteria considered in the hiring, Air Canada said. The airline released a nearly three-minute video of van der Werff addressing his hiring in French. The English-language counterpart was less than two minutes.
