ChatGPT dominated a panel discussion about the future of education at a Logic event in Toronto Monday. Pat Chaisang, founder and chief executive of international student hiring platform Isempower, said universities should look to use AI to tailor course content, especially for international students whose experiences and needs can be different. Talking point: The panel, which also included ApplyBoard CEO Meti Basiri, broke down the opportunities and concerns AI tools like ChatGPT present to higher education. The consensus was that universities have a long way to go to embrace AI and use it productively. There are even student concerns that using ChatGPT “diminishes the value of a degree” if students don’t have self-discipline, said Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance president Stephanie Ye-Mowe. Faculty need to figure out what level of tech-tool literacy graduating students should have, said Karim Bardeesy, executive director of Toronto Metropolitan University’s the Dais. “There’s always going to be a way to use the AI constructively without cheating.”
