Talking point: The Nasdaq has historically been the home of technology tickers, with stalwart names like Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet. But by the time of Shopify’s initial public offering in May 2015, software startups like Alibaba and Twitter were opting for the older NYSE. Shopify did not directly answer questions about why it was making the switch now. The firm is excited to “be listed among the most innovative tech companies in the world,” said spokesperson Alex Lyons. Shopify’s market capitalization should put it on the Nasdaq-100, an index that’s tracked by a lot of exchange-traded funds. Last month, Shopify added a U.S. executive office alongside its Ottawa headquarters in its securities filings for the first time.
