The Hayabusa2 space probe successfully deployed a small explosive to the surface of the asteroid Ryugu—located some 200 million miles from Earth—according to a release from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) on Friday. (Motherboard)

Talking point: It’s the first time in history humans have bombed an asteroid, but don’t worry—we’re not looking at a Star Wars scenario here. The mission is intended to create a small crater on the asteroid in order to collect samples for scientists to analyze back on Earth. This is the second sample collection from the probe; in February, it successfully fired a “bullet” into the same asteroid, sending particles floating away from its surface to be collected. As Ryugu is a primordial—or ancient—asteroid, JAXA hopes the samples will provide insights into the origins of life in our universe.
