Talking point: The move is in line with the company’s rebrand in January, with its new mission meant to “elevate the world’s consciousness.” Meanwhile, the new initiative serves to benefit the company in the continued collection of valuable data—WeWork already collects detailed information on the businesses that use their services, monitoring their conference rooms temperature, the level of sound and how noise travels through the offices and how many people are using the spaces. How the company manages its data will be key: Sidewalk Labs, which wants to build a smart-city development in Toronto, has faced criticism around how it will monetize the data it collects while ensuring citizens’ privacy. The We Company will likely face similar concerns as it moves into the smart-cities space.
