The European Union, India and Australia will now be covered by Twitter’s policy requiring political advertisers to be certified, and a transparency function showing the spend and demographic targeting data for their promoted tweets over the last seven days. All three jurisdictions have elections this year. The rules were first introduced in the U.S. in May 2018. (The Logic, Twitter)
Talking point: Canada also goes to the polls this year, but was not included in today’s expansion. Recent amendments to the Canada Elections Act require large online platforms to create registries of political advertising. However, the requirement differs significantly from Twitter’s existing system, as Michele Austin, head of public policy for Twitter Canada, told a parliamentary committee in November 2018. She said modifying the system according to countries’ individual rules “may prove extremely difficult.”
