Spadina-Fort York MP Adam Vaughan is worried that Ontario Premier Doug Ford will figuratively “blow up” Waterfront Toronto due to privacy concerns around the Sidewalk Toronto development. Vaughan’s district includes the Quayside site set to house the development. He said, “With a couple high-tech activists and a really flimsy, poorly written auditor’s report, [Ford’s] got the cover he needs to reverse 25 years of good, solid work and 40 years of dreaming on the Toronto waterfront, and I’ll be damned if I surrender that just because you don’t like the way Google or Facebook or Twitter handles personal data.” (Financial Post)

Talking point: Following the release of the auditor general’s report, it wasn’t clear who was championing the Sidewalk Toronto project. With Mayor John Tory speaking out in favour of the project in November and now Vaughan’s comments, it’s becoming clearer that the project is going to pit the City of Toronto and the federal government against the province. While the provincial government aims to replace the three board members it fired following the report;, Mayor Tory stepped in last month to prevent the resignation of another. Vaughan claims Ford has been trying to “sabotage” the tri-governmental agency tasked with the revitalization of Toronto’s waterfront since their days on Toronto’s city council.
