Funding for the homemade food-delivery app will go toward expanding in the U.S., starting with Dallas and Miami, the company said in a release. It also plans to secure a stronger foothold in Toronto and surrounding areas. The funding round was led by Relay Ventures (which is also an investor in The Logic), with support from Mistral Ventures and several angel investors such as Alo Group owner Patrick Kriss, Move the Dial founder Jodie Kovitz, and Ben Leventhal, founder of Eater and Resy. Talking point: Cookin, led by co-founder and CEO Morley Ivers, said it has received 2,000 applicants from chefs and food creators who want to create their own home food business. It’s banking on the idea that more cooks will want to turn to entrepreneurship and that consumers will want home-cooked meals delivered. Cookin’s funding round comes as the food-delivery market has shown signs of a slowdown. Montreal-based meal-kit company Goodfood ended its 30-minute delivery service in October and has imposed several rounds of layoffs. Winnipeg-based SkipTheDishes also made major cuts to its team last year.
