Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos announced the funding in Quebec City for an effort called Envisage, led by health accelerator Medteq+ and Age-Well, a non-profit network promoting services and technologies for seniors and caregivers. The goal is to support up to 100 projects to help commercialize or scale up production of technologies that help people age in place, and to create 500 new jobs. (The Logic)
Talking point: Targets for the funding include AI to help monitor patients’ health remotely to avoid needless hospital visits, as well as telehealth and virtual medicine offerings. Aging is a potential growth industry, with the population of Canadians 65 or older expected to double between 2009 and 2036 and to continue growing. The country already has shortages of family doctors, long-term care beds and home-care workers. The problems aren’t only in Canada, meaning there’s an international market for solutions that help keep seniors healthier and safer in their own homes.
