Greg Zeschuk said he suspected BioWare was in trouble in August when he learned of the leveraged buyout of Electronic Arts, led by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. On the heels of EA’s announcement last week that it was shuttering the Edmonton-based studio behind iconic game franchises Mass Effect and Dragon Age, Zeschuk suggested the new owners weren’t interested in BioWare’s “unusual” and complex games, which take years to develop. “It’s easier just to pump out sports games every year,” he said. Talking point: EA also cancelled development of the next Mass Effect game, and around 50 BioWare employees lost their jobs. Zeschuk defended BioWare’s original sale to the California-based game publisher, which acquired BioWare in 2007, arguing that at the time the studio saw advantages in the stability and resources of the larger company. “It’s actually, in some ways, saddest for the city of Edmonton, where we’re from, because we were kind of this beacon of hope and excitement and possibility,” he said.
