Talking point: The deal would see Stellantis off-loading a plant with a future that has been uncertain since the company shifted planned Jeep Compass production to Illinois last year, a move Ottawa has said put the automaker in default of its government funding agreement. Roshel, which makes armoured vehicles for military and law-enforcement customers, is seeking more manufacturing capacity as it pursues a multibillion-dollar contract to supply vehicles to the Canadian military. There’s no indication the more-than 2,000 laid-off Stellantis workers would get their jobs back. That’s a key concern for Unifor, which argues a sale would allow Stellantis to walk away from commitments to its workers and governments and has made the plant’s future a central issue in bargaining.
