Ottawa named the first 64 scholars who will relocate to Canada as part of the Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs of Canada program. Of the recruits, 48 are from U.S. institutions, including Harvard and MIT. The other researchers are coming from 12 countries including Germany, China, the U.K. and Japan.  (The Logic, Bloomberg)

Talking point: The program will ultimately support up to 100 researchers with $1 billion over 12 years. The recruitment push comes as some American scholars in particular look abroad for new opportunities amid U.S. research funding cuts, tighter immigration policies and the Trump administration’s clashes with universities. Canadian institutions have also launched their own efforts. The University of Toronto announced a $24-million program to recruit 100 post-doctoral researchers last November, while UBC reopened graduate admissions and fast-tracked applications from U.S. students in spring 2025 following a spike in American applications.
