Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy told The Logic that he wrote a letter to Ontario Securities Commission CEO Grant Vingoe, and spoke with the regulator’s chair, Kevan Cowan, to underline his seriousness about joining a national mutual-recognition pact. “There’s a lot of plumbing that has to be done,” the minister said. “I haven’t given them a specific timeline, other than yesterday.” (The Logic)

Talking point: Bethlenfalvy said he ended the two-decade standoff in the spirit of “nation building,” and hopes provinces will accelerate the erasing of internal trade barriers, starting with labour mobility. “There’s inertia.” The OSC works at arm’s length from the government, so there are institutional limits on a Bethlenfalvy’s ability to dictate the regulator’s day-to-day agenda. OSC spokesperson Andy McNair-West said they “look forward to continuing discussions” on Ontario’s participation in the passport system.
